Effective nurse-patient communication is fundamental to post-surgical recovery, influencing patient outcomes, satisfaction, and adherence to medical instructions. Communication encompasses verbal and non-verbal interactions that facilitate understanding, provide emotional support, and enhance the delivery of care (Adebayo et al., 2024). In surgical recovery, clear and compassionate communication between nurses and patients reduces anxiety, promotes pain management, and encourages compliance with post-operative instructions, ultimately improving recovery rates (Obinna & Yusuf, 2023).
Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Kaduna State is a leading tertiary healthcare facility that handles numerous surgical cases. However, challenges such as high patient loads, inadequate nurse-patient ratios, and time constraints may affect the quality of communication between nurses and patients. Studies suggest that poor communication in healthcare settings contributes to patient dissatisfaction, misinterpretation of post-surgical care instructions, and increased risk of complications (Eze et al., 2025).
Despite the recognized importance of communication, there is limited empirical evidence on its direct impact on post-surgical recovery at ABUTH. Understanding how communication strategies influence recovery can provide valuable insights into improving nursing practices and patient-centered care in surgical wards.
Post-surgical recovery is a critical phase that requires continuous patient engagement, proper pain management, and adherence to prescribed post-operative care. However, communication barriers between nurses and patients can hinder recovery, leading to prolonged hospital stays, post-surgical complications, and patient dissatisfaction (Ahmed & Bello, 2024).
At ABUTH, there is a growing concern regarding the effectiveness of nurse-patient communication, especially given the high patient turnover and workload in surgical wards. If communication is inadequate, patients may struggle to understand medication regimens, wound care instructions, and follow-up requirements. This study seeks to assess the impact of nurse-patient communication on post-surgical recovery, identifying areas for improvement to enhance patient outcomes in ABUTH.
The study will focus on post-surgical patients at ABUTH, assessing the role of nurse-patient communication in recovery outcomes. It will involve interviews with nurses and patients, as well as an analysis of hospital records. Limitations include potential subjectivity in patient responses and variations in communication styles among nurses.
